About Us
Troop 10 began in 1963 as the community of South Brunswick began to grow. There was a need for a second Scout Troop to serve the boys and families on the east side of South Brunswick Township. Mr. Dick Bernard, Rev. Maltby and the Monmouth Junction PTA got the Troop started. With abundant woodlands still available Troop 10 had many camping and hiking sites to use during these early years. Our scouts became outstanding in camping, cooking, and pioneering skills.

Nearly every summer Troop 10 sent a contingent to Camp Sachawawin – later enlarged to become KMSR. We also were one of the first Troops to be invited to The Snuffy Hollow Camporee in Monroe Township, attending all but one year from 1965 to the present.

With the help of local farmer and former Mayor Edgar Renk a site was developed for a second event called Monkey Junction Camporee which Troop 10 helped host for 12 years. Out of these two camporees grew a third Lake Region Camporee at Monroe, New York, which Troop 10 attended every year from 1968 until the camporee ended ten years later.

Scoutmaster Ken Blank added river and canal canoe trips to the Troops experience with a total of ten such trips during his years with the Troop.

The first long-term Scoutmaster was Howard Perdun who directed our scouts in Community Service as well as excellence in camping. He led the troop in producing prize winning floats for the annual 4th of July Monmouth Junction Volunteer Fireman’s parade.
The early years produced 3 Eagle Scouts: Ted Schulz, Keith Figgins, and Rob Priest. During the Perdun years the Troop changed sponsors, from the original sponsor (Miller Memorial Presbyterian church) to the current sponsor, American Legion Post 401.
Under the regime of the next three Scoutmasters (Jack Pilato, Timothy Brunner, and Tom Johnson) there came a focus on advancement. Also during this time Rev. John Maltby and Ken Blank attended the Philmont Scout Reservation. In 1989 and 1994 the Troop sent a contingent of scouts back to Philmont. During this time several Eagle Scouts emerged. These Eagles included Mike Machowski, Scott Kiedski, Glenn Pilato, and Matt Fede. These Eagle Scouts helped lead the Thomas A. Edison contingent at two National Jamboree’s.

After Jim Robbins time as Scoutmaster the Troop took on another long term Scoutmaster. This gentleman was Rich Charzewski. Rich’s decade as Scoutmaster produced several Eagle Scouts, including George Dyer and Kyle Charzewski. Rich also moved us toward out of state summer camps including New York State and Delaware. The troop further enjoyed trips to battleship museums, and stays at West Point (where some of our members became cadets). The Troop further got to enjoy a trip to the World Trade Center where Mr. Joseph Slovensky was Chief of Security.

This brings us to our next Scoutmaster who took on the Troop and continued with the leadership it had become accustomed to. This man was Cass Jozitias. Cass introduced us to Camp Henson and worked our Scouts to the point where we were always in contention for the best overall Troop.

When Mr. Jozitias moved on we looked at Ray Kuehner to fill the role of Scoutmaster. Mr. Kuehner set our direction and as always Troop 10 excelled.

Mr. Kuehner did an excellent job as Scoutmaster setting the bar high and challenging our Scouts to reach the expectations. However due to conflicts Mr. Kuehner was unable to continue as Scoutmaster. Mr. Kuehner turned the reins of the Troop to our current Scoutmaster Scott Williams.

Mr. Williams had no prior scouting experience. He attended the training provided by Council and took the Troop forward. Under Mr. Williams we have seen a resurgence of Eagle Scouts. While prior to Mr. Williams some of these Scouts did the work to make Eagle all of these Scouts achieved the recognition under his tenure. These Scouts are Kevin Kornfeld, David D’ Ambrosio, Michael Jozitias, Jonathan D’Ambrosio, Christopher Williams, and Wayne Kuehner. For Mr. Williams the achievement of making Eagle is like no other. He has made it his focus as Scoutmaster to see that all the Scouts who make Life Scout achieve scouting’s highest honor. High Adventure is also on Mr. Williams’ list of things to do. It is his plan that during his tenure a trip to Philmont, Northern Tier, or Seabase will occur.

Troop 10 is on its way to another 40 years of excellence.
